Lemon tree [Citrus limon]
No one knows exactly where the lemon tree originally came from, but most researchers guess China, northern Burma or India. The lemon tree is known to have arrived in Europe during the reign of Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC.
In ancient Rome, lemons were ornamental and medicinal plants valued by the rich. Images of the lemon can be found in many ancient mosaics, and charred remains of the lemon have been excavated from the ruins of Pompeii, a city that was destroyed in the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 BC.
In 17th-century Northern Europe, especially in the Netherlands, lemons were a sign of wealth, a true luxury, as valuable as the Louis Vuitton bag today. Lemons are found as status symbols in most of the still life paintings painted during that time.
Today, lemon trees grow all over the world and are widely valued and loved as ornamental and as utility trees.
Lemon tree care instructions
The lemon tree thrives indoors throughout the year as long as it gets plenty of light and sun. In summer, the tree thrives perfectly on the terrace or on the balcony. Fertilize the lemon tree every week from April to September with Kekkilä Irrigation Fertilizer. In the winter the lemon tree enjoys being in the room temperature, as well as the extra light provided by the plant lamp.
Lemon Tree pollination
The prerequisite for your own lemon harvest is that you pollinate the flower emits yourself. You do the dusting using a watercolor brush with which you gently wipe the flower over the stamen and then brush the stems of the adjacent flower. Repeat this with all the flowers. And then wait for the harvest!
