Growing the pine indoors is possible throughout the year. You can get started easily, just follow the instructions that come with the package and enjoy watching your own hand-planted tree grow. Pine is exceptionally fast to germinate, it usually only takes 1-2 weeks to see small tassel heads.

Pine (Pinus Pinea)

Pine is one of the symbols of Rome and many historic Roman roads, such as Via Appia, are lined with pines.

Pine grows a wonderful, umbrella-like top and grows in a large pot to a height of 1-2 meters. In the summer Pine brings a great Mediterranean atmosphere to the terrace or balcony. For the winter, it should be moved inside as it is hardly resistant to frost.

Care instructions

Once the growth has got off to a good start, Pine should be transferred to a deep pot and next year at the latest to an even bigger pot. Pine likes to make deep roots, so choose a pot etc. that has enough height (35-60 centimeters). A mixture of 2/3 parts acidic soil and 1/3 coarse gravel or perlite is suitable for pine soil. Fertilize with fertilizer that is suitable for pine tree from April to October once a month.

Pine enjoys a sunny location and from May to September it also enjoys the outdoors. During the winter season it should be moved in to a cool place and given light with a plant lamp. Let the plant lamp light the pine for about 8 hours daily and let the tree sleep at night in the dark. Water slightly during the winter season but enough so that the roots will not dry out. Pine cannot be planted outside in Finland.

If you want to get the umbrella-like canopy typical of pines, cut the lowest branches. If you want to slow down the growth, you can cut 2/3 of the tops of the cobs in the spring.
