Pygmy date palm (Phoenix roebelenii)

Originally from Laos and Vietnam, the pygmy date brings home a great tropical feel. It is quite slow-growing and reaches a maximum height of two meters as an adult. The date thrives as an indoor tree and it blooms and produces fruit as an adult, if it haves a really good place to grow and is well taken care of. In nature, the pygmy date is multi-stemmed, but inside it will probably grow only one beautiful trunk.

In their natural growth environment palm trees do not grow in completely sunny places, but often in the shade of higher jungle trees. This is also true for the pygmy date - if you lift it to the terrace or balcony in the summer, look for a semi-shady place for it. Inside, on the other hand, choose place that is bright and light with not too much direct sunlight.

The pygmy date loves water, especially when sprayed, because in the tropics it gets most of its water just through the air. As with other palm trees the low-water pot is the best solution. Fertilize the pygmy date with Kekkilä's Flower Nutrient according to the instructions on the packaging, from March to September. Change the date tree every 2-3 years (preferably in the spring) to a larger pot. Be careful with its delicate roots and always choose a deep pot so that the tap root that extends far downwards gets enough space. The soil is well suited for all sandy soils, for example from Kekkilä's Green Plant.
