Olive tree [Olea Europaea]
This magnificent and evergreen tree is considered in many cultures as a symbol of peace, love and victory.
Wreaths of olive trees have been wrapped around the winners of the ancient Greek Olympics and the streets of ancient Rome have been illuminated with lamps filled with olive oil. The branches of the olive trees can be found as a symbol of peace on the flag of the United Nations, in the beak of Pablo Picasso's dove of peace, as well as in many other great historical accounts, from the ancient goddesses to the Noah's Ark. Olives have also played an important role in cooking and in the dining table for millennia.
The olive tree can live up to more than 3,000 years. One of the oldest known olive trees, the Giant of Kavous, is found in Crete and is more than 14 meters in circumference and about 3250 years old. It has seen the time of Socrates and Plato, it has stood still from the great kingdom of Alexander all the way to the kingdom of Rome and from the Middle Ages to the present day. Pretty awesome right?
Olive tree care instructions
Plant your olive tree in a larger pot when it has grown to about 10 centimeters tall. Be sure to use a pot with a hole in the bottom to allow excess water to drain away. Olive trees especially like Mediterranean soil - if it is not available, green plant soil is also suitable. Be sure to put a fair layer of gravel on the bottom of the pot.
To grow strong, your olive tree needs care; plenty of light as well as watering so that the soil is moist but not wet. Allow the soil to dry lightly before watering. Press your finger into the soil, and if it feels dry for a couple of inches, it’s time for watering.
Your olive tree is also very fond of spraying with a water bottle. If you bother to take it to the shower every month, the tree will be very thankful.
When the spring sun arrives the olive tree appreciates a good fertilization. In summer, you can also move your tree out to a sunny and sheltered place on the terrace or balcony. Your tree is also thirstier in summer than in winter, so be sure to water it well.
In the winter season
In the fall and winter, your olive tree needs light, and a simple plant lamp will help it survive the dark season. Place a bulb designed for plants (e.g. Airam 10W / 840, price in stores about 12-14 euros) above your olive tree. It is good to have at least about 30 centimeters between the tree and the lamp. Let the plant lamp light for 6-10 hours / day. Be sure to turn off the lamp overnight to allow your tree to sleep.
Your winter tree will thrive in a slightly cooler, 10-15 ° heat. Water the tree less in the winter.
