True Myrtle [Myrtus communis]
In the Middle Ages true myrtle was considered the tree of the virtuous Queen Esther and it is also strongly associated with the Virgin Mary, e.g. in the stories and traditions of the Orthodox Church.
The evergreen true myrtle is native to the Mediterranean region and is well suited as an indoor tree. True Myrtle arrived in Finland at the beginning of the 19th century, when it became a trendy home plant.
When the leaves are touched, they emit a charmingly aromatic scent. The myrtle blooms in May-July with the small and fragrant flowers. Home growers often cut the myrtle into a sphere, but it may as well be allowed to grow freely. If you want to cut your myrtle, spring is the best time for it.
The most important part of a bridal bouquet
In many cultures true myrtle is especially associated with weddings as a symbol of perfect love. In England, the royal tradition is that the bride always has myrtle branches in her wedding bouquet or veil. The tradition is also strong in the Swedish royal family - most recently in the wreaths and wedding bouquets of Victoria, Madeleine and Sofia, the true myrtle branches have been in a place of honor.
Wedding traditions also include the bride taking a myrtle branch from her wedding bouquet or wreath and planting it to grow for her own daughter for her upcoming wedding day, to bring happiness and perfect love.
Taking care of the true myrtle in the spring-summer
True Myrtle thrives in a bright and semi-shady location. It should be watered frequently to keep the soil moist but not wet. Make sure that the water does not stand on the drainage plate. True myrtle loves high humidity so spray it daily to keep the tree happy. During the spring and summer fertilize your tree weekly with Kekkillä flower nutrient.
Taking care of the true myrtle in the winter season
The myrtle prefers to spend winter in a cool temperature of about 10 °C. Water less in winter; allow the surface of the soil to dry before watering.
Soil suitable for the true myrtle
Kekkilä Flower or Plant soil is ideal for the common myrtle. You can change the soil about every three years.
