Cacao tree care instructions
The natural habitat of the cacao tree is on the ground floor of the Amazon rainforest, in the shade of larger trees, and it is particularly important in its cultivation to find similar conditions.
Cacao tree grows well indoors as long as you make sure that it does not receive direct sunlight and that it is in a sufficiently humid and warm (25 - 30 ° C) place. Cacao tree is very sensitive to a lack of water, so always keep its soil moist but never soaked. Spray the tree regularly with a spray bottle to maintain moisture.
Cacao tree growing checklist:
• Scattered light - a shady habitat, “in the shadows of the rainforest”
• Sufficiently warm, 25 - 30 ° C
• Adequate watering; soil moist but never soaked. Water in the morning, use a room temperature water.
• Sufficient humidity, 70% - 100%
• Nutritious, clayey soil with a pH of 5.0-7.5.
• The tree is accustomed to the nutrient-rich soil of the tropics, so fertilize enough
• Cacao grows a long tap root, so always use a large, deep pot with plenty of perlite / pot gravel at the bottom to ensure water circulation
Adrink of the Inca, Aztec an Mayan gods
The cacao tree is originally native to South America, east of the Andes. Recent archaeological evidence found in southern Ecuador shows that cocoa beans were used at least more than 5,300 years ago.
The first European to enjoy chocolate was Christopher Columbus, who arrived in Nicaragua in 1502. Cocoa was brought to Europe a few years later by Hernan Cortés, who on his return to Spain in 1528 brought with him a Mayan recipe for “chocolha”. The drink did not initially receive an enthusiastic reception, and only after the addition of sugar did it become a popular drink in the Spanish court and gradually in other European courts.
